Under the provisions of the Investment Canada Act, all non-Canadian citizens and non-permanent residents must notify Industry Canada of their investment in new Canadian businesses or their acquisition of control of existing Canadian businesses. Any investment in a Canadian business by a non-Canadian or non-permanent resident must generally be reported. Investments over certain thresholds ($5 million dollars) and in certain prescribed industries (cultural businesses including written, video, and audio communications) are additionally subject to further review.
